Disappointing day

Postby bradderz123 » Thu May 15, 2014 7:54 pm

Decided to take a day off and just look at LFSs. Did the Crews Hill run, in Middlesex, and the Dartford/Swanley area of Kent - I actually wanted an Albino Bristlenose. Overall visited 10 aquatic shops.

Saw loads of dead fish and general stocking was poor.

I was amazed at how poor the majority of shops were. The best overall were the 'Maidenheads' - I went to 3 and the consistency was there to see.

Some of the smaller shops looked good but were only ok if you wanted the basic community set up.

Really disappointed in Wildwoods.

Overall poor labelling and numerous 'mixed malawi' tanks. Made me appreciate the fish bought off Tony all the more. :tu:

They don't do Malawis (one mixed malawi tank) but Birchwood Aquatic Centre, in Swanley, has got it right with really immaculate tanks and good stock - perhaps that's why they have the same staff I knew when keeping fish 30 years ago.

AND I didn't find a big enough Bristlenose! :td:

Many years ago Wildwoods sold me a "L137". When it arrived it was a rusty. How they made that mistake I will never know. Tried to argue about being overcharged etc (it was posted) but got nowhere.

No need to buy from them now since I have a mubuna tank now, but even so I would never buy from them again.

Wildwoods was actually the reason I went that far away from home and I was so disappointed. Very little stock, grubby looking tanks and not one person approached me to see if they could help.

It was easy to see why Maidenhead's are always busy and, presumably, do well - albeit my local one is reducing its Malawi tank numbers. Having said that perhaps I'm partly to blame as I've never bought a malawi from them - all my fish have come from Tony

My local maidenhead is brilliant the tanks are well looked after and the lads that work there seem to know there stuff. Good stock of all type of fish and they have a big display tank full of mbuna's

Lucky you. My local's 'showtank' was only three quarters full of water (has been for the last couple of weeks) devoid of any 'lookers' and is in general a poor display.

Probably reduced malawi tanks down to 15-20 but that includes a number of 'mixed' malawis.

It is - was in Weald Aquatics in Halstead (Kent) and they had a couple of big males with long bristles. They were great - rare sight!

Thumbs up for maidenhead been to half a dozen all over the country always good clean and plenty of advise, would also say some of the stuff is excessively priced though. Reading is especially good quality lad in there knows his stuff.
