Having looked the photo (and I appreciate its a photo) I wouldn't be confident of distinguishing between the low and high measurements. The nitrates look, to me, to easily be the 50ppm reading

I think Clare's suggestion of trying a different test kit is a good one as you could hopefully confirm by getting similar results. Although I eventually gave up on test kits and bought the meter.

its not 50 definitely and i water changed 40% yesterday so cant be that high, they only get fed once a day and its on flake its not like im dumping alot in the tank, as for the test kit this one is the best one the shop sold so if its wrong then thats pretty shody ud expect something that costs £34.99 to be correct =/

I run a seneye and was recently getting some unusual readings - duff slide. Read reviews, on the Internet, about test kits - not a great read.

The point is there is no way you should have a sustained reading for nitrates - so if you have, then either you are misreading or the kit is wrong. I have 34 fish, feed twice a day and my nitrates go up 40ppm over the week - so it does, of course, depend on stocking levels and feed but it never sits still.

Had a re-think on my tank think I overstocked it so had a rejig and added a new external filter so ive doubled my filtration and im doing 50% weekly water changes!

All fish looking healthy and doing well in particular one of the Aulonocara Ngara I got from Tony & Clare is starting to colour up and is looking superb ive tried to catch a photo of him but he is 2 quick and as soon as i approach the tank they all go bananas thinking DINNNNERRRR !! haha

I would say someone else has had a go with her to be honest although it has been known.
