Oasis Store - Manchester

Postby Abdul » Tue Jul 06, 2010 3:26 pm

Well, I'm going to write what i've seen today about Oasis in manchester (8 Great clowes street).. I basically went to buy some bactinettes for topping up the live bacteria in my tank, and my curiosity dragged me to have a look on the Malawi section, so here's what i've seen:

Well first of all, some of the malawi names are not labelled right and labelled differently from what I have already known..
and they were mixing up mbuna's with aulonocara's .. Looking at the colours some of them are fading, either to stress or bad water quality.. and I found couple of the red empresses, lying down which indicative of some sort of sickness.. Really feel sorry for them.. and above that the prices of this shop for anything is very over priced!

So i hinted out what i have seen to one of the younger staff, he replied " they look fine to me, but i appreciate your concern"... well i guess that it's not rocket science to identify a diseased fish..

maybe you had different experience? I don't know.. :)

to be fair they are marine specialists, the marines and corals look fantastic. Most of the lads that work in there do know there stuff , with regard to the cichlids they are all from the far east , and they do not pretend they are anything else. They said they would rather leave the cichlids to the specialist suppliers and only carry a small number in stock. i have seen them refuse to sell marines to people who they thought had tanks that wernt cycled properly, much to the annoyance of the customer.

I was in there acouple of months ago and a customer was asking if a shovel nose would be ok in his community tank of neons, guppies etc etc. Maybe it was because it was a saturday and had weekend staff in but a lad working there told him that the fish would be fine in his setup, and the shovel nose was almost fully grown at about 5-6". At this point i jumped in having kept shovel nose myself and told him he was completely wrong the fish would first eat everything in his tank and then outgrow it in no time. I was lost for words

Great place if you want general tropicals and odd balls. Malawis are your normal run of the mill stuff.

I agree very very colourful shop thought everything looked in good health too plus marines looked good.
Tanks were of good size plus plenty of fish for the newby.
Hated all the pink/orange gravel they were using in tanks but about 90% of hobbists buy it and not just children
