For sponge filters you cant beat the hamburg matten Filters, you can buy them ready to go or make your own which is dead easy to do.

This is how I made one of mine but you can use the whole end of the tank you will loose a couple of inches of tank space but they give so much more surface area over a normal sponge filter and you can pop the heater behind it to, they can be run by an air pump using an uplift tube or a small power head.
