Nitrate Meter - Nitrachek 404

Postby bradderz123 » Tue Apr 29, 2014 9:43 am

I have for the last 18 months tried to find a way to measure nitrates consistently and accurately. I can't tell you how many different test kits I've bought but have struggled to tell the difference between the various shades of whatever colour the particular brand use - must have a biot of colour blindness.

Finally my frustration reached its peak and I decided to 'bite the bullet' and purchase a meter. Sold a few things on ebay to fund the purchase which was also quite useful.

The meter I bought was the Nitrachek 404 - it offers

Quick and easy to use " Results in just 60 Seconds" Internal countdown timer.
Utilises accurate Merckoquant Nitra-Test strips
"No Messy Reagents" eliminating the risk of contamination
Large LCD, Displays results in mg/l (ppm), Range: 5 - 500 ppm
Eliminates inherent problems with the human eye to detect slight colour changes.
Memory function stores up to 20 readings, including date & time stamp.
Includes a self calibration check strip
Portable battery operated instrument, includes a handy protective wallet
Includes a 2 year warranty
Excellent service on phone when contacted regarding a set up query

It does exactly what it says on the tin. I am now able to accurately plan water changes and indeed create a better environment for the fish. I've no doubt that what I was doing was 'ok' as I didn't lose any fish but its clear that I could have done better. Personally I think this was a good investment and completes my husbandry - I now have next to no ammonia, nitrites and can keep the nitrates to a very acceptable level which I hope will reward me with better colouration and growth of the fish. :tu:

Seems abit excessive for checking your nitrate.

As long as you over filtrate and do regular water changes nitrates should be an issue.

Your money though.

I think if these were £30 everyone would buy one so it's not the item that's an issue it's the price. With my inability to work with test kits and the fact that ebay funded it I thought it was an easy choice.

At least now I can get accurate results at the drop of a hat which is what I wanted.

I was put onto it by someone who picked one up years ago and it still works perfectly so I expect to get my money's worth even if it takes time.

Appreciate it's not for everyone but just thought it was worth leaving the topic. One man's meat....
