Breeding trap??

Postby tucker » Fri Feb 26, 2016 8:02 pm

Just after a quick bit of advice, Does anybody think it would be worth me putting in a trap as one of my soulusi is carrying fry. The last lot got eaten very quickly.

That's what I've done to date. Don't use a net one though - I did and lost a lot of fry because the adult Malawis were trying to get at them, the netting was giving way and the fry, whilst not actually being eaten, were being damaged.

Also, when really small they got through holes in the lid etc - so not, imo, a guaranteed way to success but better than nothing.

I've since set up a 'breeding tank' - good idea until I saw it as an excuse to but a spiny eel....so back to the breeding traps for me then!

If you do use nets in your main tank just put some sand or gravel at the bottom, even a fake plant maybe. that will help.

If you do want to use breeding traps then use a net one and put it in a hard plastic one... Or use a net one and get an ice cream tub and drill some holes in it. Make sure the net fits nice.

Is that to stop the fry getting nipped or is there another reason for the ice cream tub? Also how do you stick it on the glass?

Yeah it's too stop them being nipped. To stick it. Use wire to form a hook over the side and attach to the tub.

Had a load of yellow fry in the morning and when I returned from work they were all gone. They must have got out the small holes in the lid of the breeding trap :td:
