test your tap water to start with see what that is, also keep your filters clean and keep organic waste to a minimum in the tank.

Failing that get ya wallet out  these are brilliant

Hi tony. Tap water tested and it's practically 0, my tank water is between 30 ppm and 40 ppm . Have checked tank and cleaned filters only last week. Would you advise to use some seachem matrix.

I've not found these products do much good personally. Your nitrates are perfectly acceptable and having the advantage of zero nitrate tap water means you can keep under control with regular water changes - my water hovers between 20 and 45ppm between water changes.

Many thanks bradderz I will continue to monitor it and do some more water changes . Fish were flicking lots so wondered if that could be the problem.

I use to change only 20%, but after talking and reading one of Tony's posts I now change 60%+ , however I have only done 2 of these, since reading the post 2 weeks ago.

I change about 75% every week but I am heavily stocked - I just change it when the nitrates reach 45 -50ppm (which is where the 'every week' comes in!). I replace with zero nitrate water(from a filter I have) and all is good.
