Postby Tony » Fri Nov 27, 2009 10:57 pm

hi just seen an ad with this description of a fish they are selling,

Astatotilapia Sp 44. Males are yellow/gold with a red top, females are silver with yellow tails.

is this a true full name of a vic fish or does the seller not know what they are selling ?

are they hybrids ??

or hap sp 44

OR astatilapia latisfasiata ?

Hi, it can get quite confusing.

No Astatotilapia species live in Lake Vicrotia itself but the surrounding bodies of water in east Africa.
CH44 - sp.44 - thick skin - red tail is quite a messey species that has no back ground history as to where they were collected and by who. Generally thought to be a mix a several unidentified species collected 20-30 years ago.

This "species" should not exhibit a strong red top.

I have noticed on occasions 3 separate sellers selling sp.44/ch44 that are obvious hybrids of either a nyererei or haplochromis sp."red back scrapper"

Keeping this in mind it is up to the individual to make up their own mind to keep them or not, hybrids from Malawi are accepted and kept by many who get a great deal of pleasure from them.
